Fiber optics and petri holders are going in, with a bit more installation, the custom chandelier will be complete! Swarming fiber-optics and kit-of-parts construction enable reconfiguration, making the light fixture a dynamic piece of art.

Le Vigne nears completion!

MADLAB’s latest project is nearing completion: a new wine boutique in Greenwich Village that specializes in artisanal Italian wines. MADLAB joined forces with spurse in the design, fabrication and installation of this unique project, re-inventing what a successful retail experience can be during this economic climate. Le Vigne’s store owner is a young sommelier maverick who dared us to rethink the power of design: how we repurpose our belongings and how we reconstitute our spaces.

Petri chandelier is getting installed!

The clients of this one-of-a-kind light fixture came to MADLAB with their design challenge after they visited Amanti Vino and saw the wine bottle chandelier. The final design even comes with its own primer. Here is an excerpt:

Your chandelier was designed for greatest adaptive potential, not only in its form and mechanics, but more importantly, in its sense of becoming. It goes without saying that a light fixture outfitted with petri dishes breaks from design norms. In fact, your chandelier is living and breathing the same air and bacteria you are, and so it would be inaccurate to think that it does not “feel” your cultural and biological life… Consider your relationship with your chandelier as symbiotic, one that is mutually changing over the lives of your family and light fixture. As you come to embody the chandelier in the way you dine and interact with loved ones, it comes to embody you.

Petia returns for 2nd symposium May 29 in Ohio

Petia Morozov and her spurse colleagues Matthew Friday, Iain Kerr and Paul Bartow return to Ohio University’s School of Art and Design to lead a workshop and talk that rethinks natural-cultural systems relative to coal mining. Southeastern Ohio is a complex landscape of deep mining, forestry, farming and multimodal distribution networks that cross histories and practices of the past century. JAE book review is published

The current issue of Journal of Architectural Education is “Alternative Architectures | Alternative Practices” (Wiley Publishing, Volume 62, Issue 4), in which Petia’s book review of Did Someone Say Participate? (MIT Press, 2006) joins a spectral chorus of alternatypes who never doubted architecture’s elasticity. Bottom line is, more research-based practices! Thanks for reading.
